I had to ask myself a question of WHAT is concept art and HOW you do concept art. That was a difficult question for me to answer. I needed to start looking at other concept artists work and how they approached to do their art work. However I was faced with their final products and not really the process of how they had reached to that stage. I wanted to learn the basics how concept art and where to begin, that’s when I came across this well known artist, Feng Zhu.
looking at his work and his YouTube school videos, I learned that the fundamentals of to do concept art work is to start from doing simple work, quick burst of sketch of natural forms, i.e. rocks, trees, animal skeletons, hairless mammals (elephants, rhinos, hippos, etc) and constantly sketch and draw to build your speed up and a library of sketch work.
During the process of drawing and sketching the artist also says don’t worry too much about the how many you can fit on one page or where to place it, because you can always scan the images into Photoshop and build a page where you can work with the composition and layer the page with the sketches.

These two images displays the process of working and sketching on a off white paper that has a bit of texture to it and then being transferred to Photoshop to make a page with his other sketch work and working with composition.
