Research 2: Battlestar Galactica Vault, Book

I have been looking at the Battlestar Galactica Vault book and I was a bit surprised that for a big SiFy franchise had used conceptual artists to help them with designing sets, spaceships to making robotic humans. The book primarily talks about the production that took place on set, however the book also shows the concept art that where designed by the artist and how it respects the design of the set.

“David MacLean’s design concept for the Pegasus Incorporated the aesthetic of the Galactica while updating it for the more spacecraft which had received a technological overhaul that the titular ship of the series had out.” pg94, pg95

“The V-World was a decadent place where death only meant a temporary reboot. The club in the pilot was filmed at the same location as the Opera House in Battlestar Galactica, elements of which can be found in the V-Club virtual extension concept art be Doug MacLean.” pg.115

I love this image as it reminds of an watercolour painting, which I’m sure it is and how this concept idea helped to create the Opera house in Battlestar Galactica. Concept art is not just limited to storyboards or illustrations, can be an elaborate painting using watercolour as your medium, and it is very well demonstrated by Doug MacLean.

“Richard Livingston developed several different looks for the robot valet, Serge, providing a size comparison to humans as part of the development of the character.” pg112, pg113

“Storyboards lay out the visuals for the miniseries scene in which Gaius Balter learns the devastating truth from Six as nuclear bombs ravage Caprica, destroying Baltar’s home in the process.” pg,78

This image speaks volume to me. I love how the storyboard that as been illustrates how the filming had take place and how each scene was shot with the help of the artists concept idea and drawing layout.

This also gives me the idea to cook my own food, take exceptional images and then turn them into concept art for my project. Where each image will show one specific dish before moving onto the next dish. I want the animation to be very minimal where a slight movement and sound will give you the illusion of the food is “active”.
